EPISODES
SEASON 1
In this season, William and Raghdan will be taking us on a journey by dissecting philosophical texts from three different philosophers. We will start our journey by delving into colonialism, international education and what “political insiders” means, then exploring the essence of membership and where it truly comes from, and finally concluding with what it means to immigrate and assimilate.
Let’s start hitchhiking!
EPISODE 1

Colonialism, borders, and international education
How do the legacies of colonialism affect international mobility today? William and Raghdan look at legal scholar E. Tendayi Achiume’s argument that people who move from the Global South to the Global North are engaged in individual acts of decolonization. They talk about what this means for their own pursuits of an international education.

EPISODE 2

Migration, membership, and marriage
Why do states restrict movement across borders? And what impact does this have on our everyday lives? William and Raghdan discuss an argument by philosopher Michael Walzer, who argues that states are more like clubs than like neighborhoods and therefore get to choose whom to admit or exclude. With their guests, Liam and Ann, they talk about what implications this has for couples in which one partner has a “weaker” passport.

EPISODE 3

Assimilation, language, and immigration
What do we lose in our attempts to integrate into new societies? William and Raghdan examine an argument by philosopher Frantz Fanon who argues that in trying to integrate themselves into white society, people of color risk losing their identity whilst perpetuating colonial ideals of white supremacy. They use this argument to re-examine the perspectives presented to us by E. Tendayi Achiume and Michael Walzer in previous episodes.
